European university Rocket League platform UniRocketeers has announced plans to create a new collegiate Rocket League tournament.

Overview of the UniRocketeers World Championship 2024

Called the UniRocketeers World Championship 2024, the tournament will be open to collegiate Rocket League teams from educational institutions around the world. UniRocketeers is a tournament organiser of Rocket League events at the collegiate level in Europe. It is the European collegiate partner of Rocket League Esports, the game’s esports body. UniRocketeers partnered with Psyonix in 2022 to lead the European expansion of the CRL World Championship, game developer Psyonix’s official collegiate Rocket League tournament.

Prize Pool and Funding

The prize pool for the World Championship starts at $600, with plans to crowdfund donations to increase the prize pot through the tournament’s GoFundMe page.

Purpose and Scope of the Tournament

According to a release, the UniRocketeers World Championship was created to provide an alternative to the CRL World Championship. The last CRL tournament was in 2023, and UniRocketeers said in the release that the CRL is on an “indefinite hiatus,” though no official announcement has been made by CRL.

Participating Regions and Teams

The tournament will feature more regions than the CRL and will be open to teams from a total of 146 countries, making it likely the most widely available collegiate esports event ever. To participate, teams can apply through the official channels, but all players on a team must be from the same university.

Four teams received direct invites to the event, based on their record in previous collegiate Rocket League events. These include the Dr. Buhmann Academy from Germany, the Italian University of Genoa, and the US’ Boise State and Ball State universities.

Statements from UniRocketeers Leadership

James ‘Cinereous’ Coleman-Evans, Director of UniRocketeers, said: “The collegiate Rocket League community has given us all so many great experiences over the last 6 years and this tournament is our way of giving something back.

“We may not have the resources to produce a like-for-like replacement for CRL, so we’ve instead focused on creating an exciting event with our own unique spin. With the addition of 4 new regions, UR Worlds 2024 will be open to institutions from 146 countries – more than any other collegiate esports event in history.”
